HOUSTON -- Charges have been filed against a 57-year-old man who police say caused a fatal accident on the Katy Freeway just past Mason Road on Thursday night.
Harris County deputy Craig Miller, 43, was killed in that crash.
Jose Vieyra, 56, was charged with criminally negligent homicide hours after the accident. He’s being held on a $35,000 bond.
Vieyra was reportedly in the country illegally.
"There is an immigration detainer on him, and when the county turns him over to ICE when they're done with the adjudication of their case, then we'll put him in removal proceedings,'' ICE deputy special agent John Gaudioso told the Houston Chronicle.
Investigators say Vieyra was the box truck that pulled out of a Toyota dealership's driveway and swung into several lanes of the road in the deputy's path at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
"You can't say how big a loss it is for the sheriff's department, the sheriff's department's family and his personal family too," Maj. Juan George said. "It's hard to imagine."
Deputy Miller was working surveillance in the Copperfield area. He was a part of the Investigative Support Services team and had been with the department for at least 20 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
