Houston for Obama Volunteer Office opens its doors
06:53 PM CST on Saturday, February 9, 2008
HOUSTON -- Barack Obama supporters rallied in the Third Ward Saturday, making noise and igniting a frenzy over the man they believe should be the next president of the United States.
“We’re going to take Harris County. I’m determined we are going to work this city and take Harris County,” Obama volunteer director Wanda Cunningham said.
The crowd was there for the official grand opening of the Houston for Obama Volunteer Office.
It came the same day their candidate was campaigning in Maine, focusing on the primary there.
But back in Texas, his supporters were rooting him on.
“It’s absolutely imperative that Texas get out there and vote on March 4 for Obama. This is the deciding vote,” supporter Karen Chadwick said.
Hillary Clinton, Obama’s opponent, was also campaigning in Maine Saturday.
“Truly, I believe Hillary is the one that knows Texas,” Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee said.
The Congresswoman, along with a group of other politicos, have thrown their support behind Clinton, the candidate they believe has long reach and appeal.
“Reaching out, reaching out to folks a Democrat typically wouldn’t do in upstate New York. What we need is a president who reaches out to everyone,” Congressman Gene Greene said.

They say Clinton is especially appealing to Hispanic voters in Texas.
In the coming weeks, experts say we can expect more of the candidates to focus their efforts on the Lone Star State.
Both Clinton and Obama have agreed to debate in Houston, putting Texas on the political map as a key state in the road to the Democratic nomination.
