HPD officers take beard battle to court | POLL
06:52 PM CST on Tuesday, November 27, 2007
Two black police officers have filed a lawsuit against the city and the Houston Police Department over their beards.
In September, the officers told 11 News they were considering taking their facial hair fight to court.
Sgt. Kenneth Perkins and Sgt. Shelby Stewart are both 26-year veterans with the force.
They say HPD stripped them of their uniforms because of their beards. The officers say they can’t shave because of a painful skin condition.
HPD policy says officers who have a beard or goatee can’t wear the HPD uniform.
The officers believe the department is singling them out.
