Police ask for public's help to halt pharmacy burglaries

Burglars are targeting pharmacies in Harris County, so Crime Stoppers is teaming up with HPD to bring some criminals to justice.
The crime is already putting a major dent in one pharmacy owner’s pocket.
“We’re losing money,” Paul Ocanas said.
In the last two months, thieves have broken into his small pharmacy four times. They have stolen at least $30,000 worth of prescription drugs, including hydrocodone, soma and xanax.
“I mean I don’t feel secure at all,” he said.
Houston police say Ocanas’ Mom and Pop business is among at least 100 pharmacies in our city recently hit by what they believe is a loosely organized crime ring.
Investigators showed pictures of the latest break-ins Friday.
Police said 10 men have been arrested, eight or nine more have been identified, but a total of 30 men are a part of the ring. They have stolen more than a million pills, with a street value of up to seven dollars per pill.
“We’re currently following all leads,” Rebecca Follies from HPD said.
Police say in all break-ins the suspects have stolen only prescription pills.
A few weeks ago Esther Cohen’s pharmacy in East End was also broken into. Cohen’s case remains unsolved and police say they have made some progress in the investigation.
“We have quite a few identified. Not all of them at this point,” Lt. Dan Webb said.
Meanwhile Paul Ocanas has all but given. The cameras and chain links on his door don’t seem to keep the thieves out.
“I’ve gotten to the point I don’t repair the doors anymore,” Ocanas said.
Authorities said the thieves steal drugs such as Xanax, hydrocodone, Soma and then sell them in neighboring cities and states. They believe the men have stolen a million pills, which could total up to $12 million in street value, depending on the city.
“This affects our children, our neighborhoods, our citizens of Houston, and we really need the public’s help with crime tips,” HPD Lt. Rebecca Follis said.
This has prompted some to take extraordinary security measures in the East End.
