Family alleges Pasadena police
killed loved one

When Elvia Garza's brother Pedro Gonzalez died in police custody, she felt Pasadena police were not giving her the whole story.

"Now a cause of death has come out I realize yes my feelings were correct,” said Garza. “They told me that he had died of a heart attack, my heart was telling, I was trying to accept that. But deep down inside of me that that wasn't so."

The medical examiner just ruled Gonzalez' death a homicide. The release of that report brought activists to the police department - with questions.

"Not until the M.E.'s office did a preliminary investigation that we found there was police brutality,” said Deric Muhammad or the Millions More Movement.

Did Pasadena police use excessive force? Several agencies, including the FBI and the Harris County DA, are investigating.

"We have evidence that there was force used at the time of the arrest right now looking at the evidence - one of the causes could have been an action by police,” said Harris County Assistant District Attorney Joseph Ownby.

In a police report, officers say they picked up Gonzales for public intoxication. When he resisted arrest, they used knee and elbow strikes to subdue him.

They also say he fell while being walked to the car. A short while later he died in police custody.

The medical examiner's report says Gonzales died of blunt force trauma to the chest, broken ribs and other injuries.

The case of Pedro Gonzales may go to a grand jury by the end of the September to figure out just where justice lies.
