Gamerooms prove to be juicy robbery targets

The sign on the outside clearly states that the place is “open.” But unless you are a familiar face or have a so-called membership, you just cannot ring the doorbell wave at the surveillance cameras and walk right in.

Police say it is an illegal gambling room. There are literally hundreds of them located all over the city.

But with just two Houston police officers assigned to investigate them there are few that have been forced to go away.

These illegal businesses may not be worried about the police, but they should be worried about dangerous crooks.

In the last 10-monthsthere have been numerous armed robberies at illegal game rooms all over this city.

Dangerous suspects that are banking on the victims not reporting the crimes - because they themselves should not have been there in the first place.

But while HPD's vice division may have bigger fish to fry the department’s robbery division is taking these cases seriously.

Over the weekend, good police work led to the arrest of two young women - believed to be responsible for at least seven game room robberies.

“Every citizen in Houston benefits from this arrest because this had the potential to tie up hundreds of man hours, from calls to service to writing reports to investigations everyone benefits from this. We got them in a relatively early stage,” said Sgt. Richard Nieto of the HPD robbery division.

Talking to victims and witnesses at all the locations that were robbed HPD was able to determine what kind of car the women and one male were driving.

Nieto says because the suspects were two women they were more likely to be let into the businesses, but once inside they were just as aggressive as their male counterparts were.
