Jaywalking suspects lead to police shooting
11:34 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 30, 2007
A suspect was shot and a police officer grazed by a bullet during a shoot-out in Southwest Houston Wednesday night. The shootings occurred in the 6800 block of Renwick about 6 p.m.
Authorities told 11 News that a police tactical team was in the area working another case when the officers came across three men who were “jay walking” and “looking suspicious.”
When the officers stopped the three men for questioning, one was found to be in possession of a gun. While that suspect was being placed inside a waiting patrol car, a second suspect got into a struggle with another police officer.
Officers said that suspect too was armed and during the struggle the gun went off grazing the officer in the cheek. The officer who was taking the first suspect in custody then turned and fired off at least one shot in the direction of the suspect that was struggling with the other officer.
The suspect was struck once in the chest said authorities.
The injured officer was taken to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital while the suspect was being treated for a gunshot wound at Ben Taub Hospital. The suspect was said to be in stable condition.
The other two men were taken into police custody. There was no confirmation that any charges would be filed against those two men.
