A Metro bus struck a pedestrian and then smashed into a brake shop near downtown Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred in the 2000 block of Dowling at about 5:05 p.m.

Investigators said a white Trans Am blew through a red light at Dowling Street near downtown. At about that time the Metro bus with 15 passengers aboard was in the intersection and rammed into the sports car.

The bus then careened into the parking lot of Midtown Brake shop and into an RV parked in its lot. The bus hit the RV with such force that it pushed the large vehicle into the side of the brake shop causing the wall to collapse.

A Midtown Brake employee working in the garage was injured by falling debris.

That employee suffered “non-life threatening injuries” said officials. The same for those aboard the bus where 10 passengers and the bus driver where transported to the hospital. The driver and passenger of the Trans-Am were also injured and taken to the hospital.

None of the injuries was considered life threatening said officials.

Travis Jones watched the whole scene unfold from his car. He got out and rendered aid to one of the people in the Trans Am.

“I just stopped the car and got out and ran over to him, and a guy was coming up with a knife, cutting the seatbelt lose and jerking him out of there and pulled him away from the car,” said Jones. “He was screaming and hollering that his leg was broke, and I mean it was twisted pretty bad.”

As were the bus and the RV.

All because a white Trans Am ran a red light.

“Yeah, the white car ran the red light. Because me and my sister stopped at the light and he just passed me by,” said eyewitness Lee Johnson.

While it does not appear the Metro bus driver was at fault, as a matter of routine as part of the investigation he will be required to take a drug test.

Meanwhile police were considering if the driver of the Trans-Am would be cited.
