Nearly 250 animals were seized from a home on Chew Road, near Sealy on Wednesday night.

About 29 goats were taken.

The Houston SPCA went to the property and spent several hours gathering the animals to bring them to the Houston facility.

Among the animals were more than 150 rabbits that had been kept outside in pens. That made the transfer much easier for SPCA workers.

Other rabbits were in spaces so small that they could not even turn around.

There were also 29 goats, including some that are pregnant.

There were 20 chickens running around the rural property.

The three cats, 27 dogs and a guinea pig were kept inside the home of the elderly lady.

Sources said some of the animals, as well as the home itself, were in pretty poor condition.

“The house itself was pretty tough.  It was very dirty, lots of feces built up and very unkempt so you could tell that the owner probably had some trouble keeping up with the animals, as well as herself,” said the SPCA’s Heidi Brasher.

The SPCA said it was notified of the situation this morning and sent an investigator to the property.

The homeowner was hospitalized and neighbors called because they were worried about the condition of the animals.

We were told that the woman has terminal cancer.

There will be a custody hearing Dec. 31 to determine if the SPCA has formal custody.  After that, most of the animals will be adopted out, although some will have to be euthanized.
