Extraordinary homecoming for blind veteran

The war on terror has left thousands of Americans wounded and disabled -- some for life. KHOU-TV Kenny's wife helps him learn his way around their new house. Army Private Kenny Adams lost his sight. But Thursday his life took another turn when he was given a new home for the holidays. Their front yard was crowded with friends and family, but mostly with those who'd been touched by their story -- like the Boy Scouts. "We raised $500," a Boy Scout told the crowd. The high school chorus was also moved. "A check for $900 to get you started," the student said as she presented the check. More than 100 people played a part in giving them the key to their new house. You may remember when Private First Class Kenny Adams came home from Afghanistan. He had been blinded was wearing sunglasses and holding onto his wife Katie's arm. That was 20 months ago. He's still at Katie's elbow, but he's better now. The seizures, the result of an accidental bullet through the frontal lobe of his brain, are now months apart. And he thinks about what life could hold. "I would like to work somewhere, do what I can with what I have left," Adams said. The house is a gift coordinated by Coalition to Salute America's Heroes, a national organization dedicated to helping injured military veterans when they return home. "We've helped close to 1,000 people so far," said Doug Plank, Coalition to Salute America's Heroes. "Sometimes it's just turning on their electricity." In Kenny and Katie's case, they came up with a $250,000 house, which Kenny was busy memorizing. "We just play little games to would help me figure out the house more," Adams said. "If I can't find her, I'll find the couch … watch TV." One thing he didn't lose was his sense of humor.
