Galveston's Salvation Army brings hope after Hurricane Ike
05:37 PM CST on Thursday, November 27, 2008
GALVESTON – A Thanksgiving dinner at the Salvation Army on Galveston Island is nothing new, but this one is special. That’s because many of the people sustained serious damage to their homes during Hurricane Ike.
“You get discouraged and then you feel good when something gets done. Then you have to go on to another problem,” said Richard Black, Salvation Army volunteer and Hurricane Ike victim.
Black and his wife have been volunteering for years, but this Thanksgiving they had more in common with the people standing on the other side of the serving line than ever before.
“It's just so sad because everybody lost everything. One of the men here belongs to our church and he lost his job,” said Mary Alice Black, volunteer.
Much was taken away from the Salvation Army itself. Water destroyed the entire first floor, so today's meal was a milestone to show that progress is taking place.
