KEMAH -- Nearly two months after being hammered by Hurricane Ike, the Kemah Boardwalk is back.

The boardwalk is holding a party Friday night to welcome visitors back to area restaurants, shops and other attractions.

Joe's Crab Shack is serving up seafood dishes again for the first time since Ike forced it to close temporarily.

“I’m actually very impressed that they’ve come so far in a relatively short period of time,” said customer Deola Wilburn.

Regular customers aren't the only ones smiling. Employees were thrilled to be back at work.

“I was almost nervous, even though I’ve worked here for two years," said bartender Brittany Sloan. "I didn't know what it was gonna be like, but I was pretty excited...”

The popular restaurant has come a long way since Ike's storm surge pushed 17 feet of water into Kemah.

“Right here at Joe’s Crab Shack, there was a boat that was flipped over, there was a jet ski in this area," said Kemah Boardwalk General Manager Tim Anderson. "Probably eight or nine feet of debris in front of this restaurant.”

Work will continue until all of Kemah's attractions are up and running again.

The other Kemah restaurants that have reopened are Cadillac Bar, Chart House, Babin's Seafood House and Saltgrass Steak House.

More than 400 workers have put in 18-hour days to repair and rebuild the boardwalk.

They will continue the hard work until all of Kemah's attractions are up and running again.
