Galveston sets deadlines for free debris removal

09:13 AM CDT on Tuesday, October 28, 2008

By Leigh Jones / The Daily News

GALVESTON — Residents have until Nov. 30 to clean out their houses and have debris removal companies pick up the material free of charge.

Commercial property owners have until Nov. 15 to have their debris at the curb.

Crews will only pick up storm-damaged debris. They will not collect materials related to repair work or new construction.

Material set out for pickup must be brought to the curb. Crews cannot come on to private property to remove debris.

Piles placed in the street should not impede traffic. Material cannot be placed in alleys.

To prevent possible damage, material also should not be placed on or near water meters, fire hydrants, power or cable boxes, mailboxes or city garbage carts.

Any damage caused by the debris removal crews should be reported to the city’s Public Works Department at 409-797-3630.

Debris must be sorted into four piles — green waste, demolition debris, white goods and household hazardous waste, which includes paint, solvents, chemicals, cleaners, television sets and fuel.

Residents are expected to clean up the streets after crews have picked up the piles. The streets should be swept, not cleared with a leafblower.

Spoiled food should be left in refrigerators, which can be wrapped in duct tape and set out with other white goods.

Food that has already been removed should be put in three trash bags, tied closed and placed in city garbage carts.

All normal household garbage should also be put in a city garbage cart.

To report a cart that disappeared during the storm, call 409-797-3630.

The city’s transfer station, 5515 Harborside Drive, has also reopened. Residents can make limited drop-offs during normal operating hours — 7 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturdays.

The recycling center, 702 61st St., just north of Broadway, is also accepting paper and aluminum. The center is open 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
