GALVESTON—David Lucky’s name is synonymous with his good fortune.

“I guess it worked. The houses are still here,” David Lucky, from Surfside Beach, said.

What’s not there are stretches of the Bluewater Highway outside his home.

Ike took large bites out of it.

“Parts of it were washed out and if you weren’t paying attention you could go off into the water,” he said.

It’s cleaned up now and dotted with warning signs. SIx out of ten miles of Highway 257 are destroyed, forcing drivers up on the beach.

“Aint worth a damn.  It’s tore up.  You got to have a little sport in you to make it,” Mark Dixon said.

There are parts of Bluewater Highway, just ends, completely washed away by Ike. Authorities estimate it will cost between $50 million and $100 million to fix.

“Most of the rest of the way is similar to this,” Brazoria County Commissioner Donald Payne said.

Payne and his team have their work cut out for them.

“My role is to try and find funding to rebuild this road,” Payne said.

And that has others worried.

“Funding is really the big issue here. Are we going to get state and federal funding to do this?”  Brazoria County engineer, Gerald Roberts, said.

Besides road repair and dune building, Brazoria County wants to build a rock wall similar to the one in Surfside along Beach Drive. The wall saved much of that road.

Bluewater Highway is crucial to Brazoria County’s tourism business.

“Without this road the only way to get to Galveston now is go up by 2004,” said Payne.

Lucky knows his repairs are small compared to the road.

Hurricane Ike left considerable damage in Surfside Beach, Texas, Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008.

But he is still feeling powerless.

“It’s not near as bad as not having power,” Lucky said.

He’s still waiting for his lights to be turned back on.
