Dickens on The Strand, Lone Star Rally on

08:11 AM CDT on Wednesday, October 1, 2008

By Leigh Jones / The Daily News

GALVESTON — The island’s annual Dickens on The Strand holiday event is still scheduled for Dec. 6 and 7, according to the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Meanwhile, organizers of the Lone Star Rally said that event, which brings thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts to the island, also would go off as planned.

There was concern the island would not be ready to host the event because of damage caused by Hurricane Ike in the city’s historic downtown and seawall area, where the event typically is held.

But the event’s location likely will change based on which parts of the island are ready to welcome large numbers of people, city officials said.

The rally will emphasize efforts to raise money for Galveston’s recovery, according to the rally’s Web site.

Rally officials plan to establish a Rally to Rebuild fund and set up more than 20 donation stations around the rally to allow participants to give, according to the Web site.

The producers also plan to host a telethon in the Galveston Island Convention Center on Nov. 1 to raise money for the recovery fund.

They will donate a portion of the event’s total sales to the rebuilding fund, according to the Web site.

The rally is scheduled for Oct. 30 to Nov. 2.
