Texas shrimpers lose money after Gustav
07:21 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 2, 2008
GALVESTON -- Texas shrimpers were hoping to net big profits from Gustav, but instead, they lost money.
On Tuesday many of the shrimping boats in Galveston were not able to go out on the Gulf. Even thought Hurricane Gustav is gone, the water is still too rough.
But local shrimpers said they aren't just losing one day of profits, but four days. This is because many of the fishing boats have been docked in Texas City since Saturday just in case Gustav hit the area.
However, even with the shrimpers still docked, many believe it won’t affect the price. Instead, they are more worried about the storm slowing the supply of red snapper.
“I've had tons of my suppliers asking if I have fish. I had to tell them I don't have anything. My boats had to come in and wait it out,” said Nicholas Gutierrez, local fisherman.
While Galveston didn't have to deal with Gustav directly, it did make its presence known with the people who make their living off the water.
Thankfully recovery is only a day away.
