GALVESTON COUNTY
Dolly a 'dud' for Galveston
01:53 AM CDT on Thursday, July 24, 2008
GALVESTON, Texas -- The Category 2 hurricane may have lashed the South Texas coast, but in Galveston County, Dolly was a dud.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t even get the kind of rain we were projected to get over the last couple of days because we sure could have used it,” said John Simsen, the county’s emergency management coordinator.
The island received 0.16 inches of rain, while 0.39 inches for rain fell in League City, said Debbie Helvey, meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Forecasters originally predicted an inch or two of rain would fall in the area.
The peak wind gusts on the island reached 38 mph, while winds in League City gusted up to 29 mph, Helvey said.
Tides were also lower than expected.
At their highest, tides rose to three feet, about one foot lower than the four-feet tides that were expected, according to the National Weather Service.
Sheriff’s deputies and island police officers monitored the main roadways on the peninsula and the island’s West End, but the water never crossed the pavement, Simsen said.
He said the hurricane was good practice for the county’s emergency management team to prepare for the rest of the hurricane season.
“It’s is going to continue to pick up,” he said.
“These are the kinds of storms that can be frightening. They can form quickly and be on our doorstep before we even know it.”
