Dickinson police are using new technology and going public again to help solve an 18-year-old abduction and rape case. The sketch above is of the suspect who raped and left for dead an 8-year-old girl in 1990. Click on video for Jeff McShan's 11 News report.

DICKINSON, Texas -- On the night of Aug. 10, 1990, Jennifer Schuett was grabbed from her bedroom, raped and then left for dead. The rapist was able to abduct her through an open window of the family's Dickinson home.

When she was found 12 hours later, Schuett had been sexually assaulted and her throat slashed. When Life Flight picked her up and took her to UTMB in Galveston, nurses initially thought that is the 8-year-old would not be able to talk again.

Despite a composite sketch of the suspect and a description of his car, the attacker has never been arrested for the crime. Now Dickinson police, with the help of the FBI, hope to use new technology to break the case.

During the initial investigation, police located some of Schuett's clothing as well as the attacker's clothing too. The DNA from those items, combined with new technology could finally lead to an arrest.

Dickinson police hope the time since the crime will also convince someone to step forward.

“We're hoping that somebody will come up with some information, maybe saying, ‘18 years ago I was afraid to say something, but now 18 year later, I am not,'” said detective Tim Cromie.

The FBI has also made the case a focus case of its national Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team.

“After a few months time, they are going to mobilize a team to go to Dickinson and help follow leads and do some leg work,” said FBI Special Agent Richard Rennison.

The case's newfound interest is welcomed news to one person in particular – Jennifer Schuett, who is alive and who at 26-years-old is doing well.

“She is a wonderful person. She keeps in contact with us on a regular basis and is very interested in the case,” said Cromie.
