The baby's mother said she suspected something was wrong.
TEXAS CITY — State officials were expected Thursday to place an infant boy with relatives of a woman charged in the death of Baby Grace.
Shawn Michael Trenor was born June 26 at Mainland Medical Center in Texas City to Kimberly Dawn Trenor, 19, and Royce Clyde Zeigler, 25.
The healthy boy was released Thursday from the hospital, and state officials were expected to take him to Dallas, where Trenor’s relatives live.
Trenor and Zeigler are charged in the death of Riley Ann Sawyers, Trenor’s 2-year-old daughter. The little girl’s body was found Oct. 29 in a plastic box by a Galveston Bay fisherman.
Authorities named Sawyers Baby Grace until learning her identity.
Kimberly Trenor and Zeigler remain incarcerated at the Galveston County Jail on bonds of $850,000, each charged with capital murder in Sawyers’ death.
Estella Olguin, a spokeswoman with state Child Protective Services, said state District Judge Michael Schneider awarded temporary custody Wednesday to the Dallas relatives, who have requested to remain anonymous.
“The family wants him to have as normal a life as possible without the family’s past following him,” Olguin said.
A show-cause hearing is scheduled Wednesday in Houston at Schneider’s courtroom, where the judge could grant permanent custody to Trenor’s relatives, Olguin said.
Kimberly Trenor and Zeigler could appear in Schneider’s court that day or be represented by their attorneys, Olguin said.
Messages left with Zeigler’s lawyer this week, inquiring whether the inmate intends to challenge custody proceedings, were not returned.
Olguin said the state believes it is in the best interest of the child for him to be placed permanently with Trenor’s relatives so they can adopt him. The adoption would also deny Trenor and Zeigler access to the child, Olguin said.
“If both parents give up parental rights, it will make the transition smoother,” Olguin said.
