Police: Texas City good Samaritan likely thwarted girl's kidnapping

11:36 AM CDT on Tuesday, July 1, 2008

By Chris Paschenko / Galveston County Daily News

TEXAS CITY — A good Samaritan likely thwarted a kidnapping that could have led to a sexual assault, Texas City police said Monday.

Cpl. Elroy Montgomery said the mother of a 16-year-old girl reported the Sunday incident to police.

Two Hispanic men between 20 to 30 years old, who were wearing white T-shirts and bluejeans, drove up to the girl at 5:46 p.m. in the 1700 block of 23rd Street North.

“The males stopped in a lane of traffic and mumbled something to her daughter that she couldn’t understand,” Montgomery said.

“At that point, she told them, ‘I don’t know what you’re saying,’” Montgomery said.

The mumbling could have been an attempt to lure the girl closer to the car, Montgomery said.

One man exited the small, gray or white, two-door vehicle and told the girl to come with him so they could have sex, Montgomery said.

The make and model of the car wasn’t known, Montgomery said.

“The victim began swinging her arms to keep the suspect from grabbing her,” Montgomery said.

“She created enough attention, that a female passing by in a vehicle noticed the altercation, stopped, got out and started yelling she was calling the police,” Montgomery said.

The men left northbound on 23rd Street, and the victim was not injured, Montgomery said.

Police didn’t know the identity of the woman who interrupted the incident, Montgomery said.
