June among driest, warmest on record in Galveston County

10:17 AM CDT on Monday, June 23, 2008

Although Galveston County escaped mostly unscathed from severe weather during the weekend, the rainfall was a welcome reprieve for one of the island’s driest Junes in 119 years.

Josh Lichter, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in League City, said Sunday his office received no reports of weather-related damage from Saturday evening’s storms in Galveston County.

Isolated power outages and downed lines were reported during the storms.

There were reports of quarter-inch hail in Texas City and wind gusts in the county to 50 mph, Lichter said.

Scholes International Airport registered 0.34 inches of rainfall on Saturday, bringing June’s total to 0.42 inches, Lichter said.

“Before (Saturday), it was going to go down as the fifth driest on record,” Lichter said, but Saturday’s rainfall bumped June 2008 out of the top 10.

The driest June on record was 1907, when the island received only a trace of rain.

The weather service forecasts a 20 percent chance of rain for today and Tuesday.

Galveston residents are also experiencing one of the warmest Junes on record.

“The average temperature so far for the month is 85.1 degrees,” Lichter said.

“If it holds through the end of the month, this will be the third-warmest June on record,” he said.

June’s normal temperature is 82.2 degrees.

Lichter said weather patterns should normalize by the end of the week, returning to early morning showers near the coast and storm activity moving inland as days progress, he said.
