Deck breaks; man, woman fall 20 feet
09:34 AM CDT on Wednesday, June 11, 2008
SAN LEON — Two San Leon residents were seriously injured when an outdoor patio deck gave way, sending them plunging 20 feet to the ground, a fire official said Tuesday.
Scott Lyons, assistant fire chief at San Leon Volunteer Fire Department, said a rail broke loose from a porch in the 100 block of 13th Street about 11 p.m. Monday.
The names of the two injured, a man and a woman, weren’t available Tuesday, but Lyons said the man was the most seriously injured because he landed on concrete. The woman landed on grass, Lyons said. Both were knocked unconscious, he said.
“The guy came to, grabbed a cell phone out of his pocket and called 911,” Lyons said. “He was having a tough time breathing, had a broken rib and maybe a punctured lung and complaining of neck and back injuries.”
The two were taken about a block away to the fire station, where a medical helicopter flew them to Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Lyons said the pair remained in stable condition Tuesday and that the accident didn’t require a police report.
