Investigating a fatal fire in Crystal Beach

CRYSTAL BEACH, Texas — Fire investigators on Thursday revisited the scene of a fatal fire to search for clues proving Sam Brown’s death was indeed accidental as law enforcement initially surmised.
Investigators don’t suspect foul play, said Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.
“We’re going back and taking another look at things to make sure we didn’t miss anything, which we do in any case where there’s a death,” he said. “We’re reviewing some things to make sure we didn’t leave any stone unturned.”
The Galveston County Medical Examiner’s office has not released a cause of death because the investigation is pending, said spokesman John Florence.
Rescuers reported hearing Brown yelling from inside his burning home, 1110 Tinkle Lane, early Wednesday morning, but they could not save him because the fire was too widespread, said Charlie Bouse, Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department chief.
By the time firefighters extinguished the blaze, Brown was dead, Bouse said.
Tuttoilmondo said Wednesday the fire that killed Brown started in a light fixture. He was unable to escape because fire blocked a front door and stairway, the only exits, Bouse said.
“We have no reason to believe this was a homicide or anything suspicious,” Tuttoilmondo said.
Brown was a plumber and longtime resident of Crystal Beach. He volunteered every year during the annual Crab Festival as an emcee.
