Alvin teen dies in car accident on FM 517
08:31 AM CDT on Monday, May 12, 2008
LEAGUE CITY — A teenage girl from Alvin High School died in a rollover car accident Saturday night in League City.
Emelia Arredondo, 15, and three other Alvin teenagers were riding in a car headed west on FM 517 in League City, said Brent Roper, a trooper with the Department of Public Safety.
The driver of the car, 16-year-old Matthew Caston-Cernoch, was driving over the posted speed limit of 60 mph when the 1998 Ford Contour left the road, hit the ditch and rolled at least twice before stopping, Roper said.
Arredondo, who was sitting in the back seat, was partially ejected from the car, Roper said. She was not wearing her seat belt, he said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ashly Spell, 15, who was also sitting in the back seat, was taken by helicopter to Memorial Herman Hospital in Houston with internal injuries, Roper said. She’s in stable condition.
Caston-Cernoch and the other front-seat passenger were both wearing their seat belts, Roper said. Neither was injured.
Because Caston-Cernoch is not yet 18 years old, he is required to have an adult with him at all times while driving, Roper said. No charges have been filed.
