TEXAS CITY, Texas -- Two Houstonians were killed Wednesday morning in a brutal collision on a troublesome stretch of State Highway 146. The pair was killed when their car pulled into the path of an oncoming pickup truck as they attempted to cross the highway.

Ty Van Nguyen, 57, was driving a Toyota Tacoma and attempted to cross the southbound lanes of State 146 to reach the northbound lanes, which are located across a grassy median.

Eyewitnesses told police that as Nguyen entered the intersection at Atwater and Highway 146, that he paused for a moment as a Ford 150 traveled southbound on the highway. The oncoming truck smashed into Nguyen’s vehicle killing him as well as 67-year-old passenger Ngu Van Vo.

To other people in the vehicle were injured in the collision and were taken to UTMB’s John Sealy Hospital in Galveston with serious, but not life threatening injuries said police.

Texas City police said the driver of the Ford truck will not be cited and that it appears Nguyen's hesitation as he crossed the highway caused the accident.

Texas City police said State Highway 146 has proven to be a dangerous roadway and the scene of several fatal accidents over the past three years. In fact, five people were killed along the stretch of road last year and with Wednesday's fatal accident, thus far four people have been killed this year.

Police said that because the highway has several unprotected intersections, such collisions as Wednesday’s fatal wreck are not uncommon.
