Fire destroys three-story house
08:29 AM CST on Monday, February 18, 2008
TIKI ISLAND — A fire Sunday afternoon turned a three-story home into a blackened, smoking skeleton of charred wood and melted siding.
A man living in the 300 block of Admiral Circle called 911 at 1:05 p.m. Sunday after hearing a crackling sound in his garage, officials said.
The cause of the sound was a fire that had broken out in the downstairs garage.
Although firefighters arrived within minutes, the entire house was engulfed in flames when they reached the house.
An hour later, the only flames that remained were in the third floor, and firefighters were sweeping the floor to snuff out the last of them.
The only injury appeared to be to the homeowner, who was receiving treatment for a minor burn to his right wrist while firefighters from Tiki Island, Galveston, Hitchcock and Bayou Vista fought the fire.
Fire Chief Randy Phipps said the cooperative effort was “fantastic,” and neighbors also pitched in, with some bringing bottled water for firefighters who needed cooling off.
The two houses on either side of the one consumed by fire suffered some heat damage.
The house where the blaze started appeared to be a total loss, Phipps said.
Phipps said officials would investigate this week to determine what caused the fire.
