Baby drinks bleach mixed with formula

SAN LEON — A baby was taken to a Galveston hospital by ambulance Tuesday afternoon after drinking bleach that his mother accidentally mixed in with his formula at a mobile-home park.
The 1-month-old child was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, but was not seriously injured and is expected to fully recover, said Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened shortly before 2:35 p.m. at the Bayshore Mobile Park in the 200 block of 27th Street in San Leon, according to reports.
The child’s grandmother was doing laundry when she saw that one of the bottles she was using was leaking bleach, Tuttoilmondo said.
She put the bleach in an empty bottle and the child’s mother mistook it for the bottled water she usually used for the child’s formula, he said.
The mother accidentally poured the bleach in with the formula and it made the baby sick.
Two teenagers — reported on the police scanner as being 14 and 15 — who were present realized what had happened and told the mother, who immediately called 911, Tuttoilmondo said.
A manager of the mobile-home complex said she had seen an ambulance but was unfamiliar with the incident.
The case had not been referred to Child Protective Services as of Tuesday, said CPS spokeswoman Gwen Carter.
Tuttoilmondo said authorities will not pursue charges. “Everything about this says ‘accident,’” he said.
