Report: Unclean waters in Galveston County
09:09 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 7, 2007
If you are going to the beach near 25th Street in Galveston, you should know an environmental group claims it was one of the most heavily polluted with bacteria in Galveston County last year.
“The biggest concern is the kids,” said beach goer Tony Wellborn, who brought his family to the island for a day at the beach Tuesday.
He checked on line first for tips of how to prevent one of his kids from getting sick.
“They're saying if your kids have cuts on their legs they shouldn't in the water,” he said.
The Natural Resources Defense Council in its report claims 23 water sites in Galveston County had levels that exceeded standards for water quality. In other words, the areas are polluted.
Still, the Galveston County health department maintains the beaches are safe.
“The average person that gets in the water even when there could be an elevated level the majority of may experience some gastro intrisits or something of that nature,” said health department spokesman Kurt Koopman. “Most people are going to go into the water and not have a problem.
The bacteria and contamination comes from, among other places, construction sites, rain run off as well as human and animal waste.
Children, the elderly and people with open wounds and cancer are most at risk of getting sick if they swim in so-called dirty water.
On Tuesday, there were no warnings and little worries.
