Galveston condo project traffic plan hits roadblock

Some call it the spur or the curve. And there's a fear in Galveston that something else is coming around the bend.
All because of Lamson Nguyen.
Nguyen has lived in Galveston for 28 years. He owns the land overlooking English Bayou.
"This is the reason I want to build a condo here,” he said.
The condominiums would be in a pair of seven story buildings. But he trouble comes with the road next door.
Changing the curve from a one-way bypass linking busy 61st street with Broadway into a two-way street, allowing those living in the condominium’s 96 units to come and go.
And turn and tow their boats on to 61st street, clogging it even further.
"It's going to cause a high-density situation here and it's going to create a dangerous situation for our residents,” said resident Bob Hensley.
He got 20 of his neighbors to sign a petition opposing the project. One of the members of the city's planning commission, Elizabeth Beeton already does.
"Our tourists are not going to be able to get out of here and get home, Beeton complained.
But Nguyen hired engineers to come up with the new traffic pattern. He'd pay for it, and the state approved it.
"If you look at all the facts, I think you'll realize it's a rational project,” Nguyen said.
"All that's here now is dirt and rebar, dredged from the Galveston causeway project. It will sit here until the Galveston City Council decides what to do.
"Yeah I'm nervous to see the result, I've been at this project for three years and I've owned the project for seven years and this is my main project,” Nguyen said. “It's the largest project I can do for myself."
