Morgue needs help identifying body

12:59 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 30, 2007

By Scott E. Williams / The Daily News

GALVESTON — Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man found dead on the island more than two years ago.

The man, a likely transient, apparently died of natural causes.

Despite the fact that he turned up dead near Calvary Cemetery more than 28 months ago, investigators still do not know who he was.

“The official cause of death is ‘undetermined,’ because the state of the remains made a specific determination difficult,” said John Florence, spokesman for the medical examiner’s office.

“However, there were no signs of foul play.”

The man had been dead for “weeks, if not a month” when a transient found the body, Florence said.

The man’s mummified remains were found Jan. 26, 2006, in a clearing in the 2500 block of Central City Boulevard, about 30 feet south of the graveyard. He apparently had set up a campsite there.

“That area is known to be used by the transients and homeless of Galveston as a place to sleep,” Florence said.

A Houston police artist made a clay restoration of the dead man’s features, and Florence said he hoped someone would recognize the face.

Florence said the dead man appeared to have been 45 to 55 years old and 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-10. He was a white man, with gray hair and facial hair.

Florence asked anyone with information on the man’s identity to call the medical examiner’s office, at 409-935-9274.
