06:50 PM CDT on Sunday, August 31, 2008
If you are in a Gulf Coast evacuation zone, you may need to leave in the event of a hurricane.
A map has been created of the ZIP code zones and the order in which each zone would need to evacuate.
Decide early where you will go when a hurricane threatens and make preparations. Your general objective should be to move away from the coast and well inland.
You should have a disaster plan in place in advance for your family and pets.
If you live along the coast, keep your gas tank full and have a family plan.Ensure your vehicle is ready for the trip and you have packed your emergency kit.
Know your evacuation routes and take a map with you.
Your mayor or county judge will make the call for your jurisdiction to evacuate.
Local officials will stagger the evacuation to keep traffic moving. Wait your turn to leave. Here are more evacuation tips.
The Texas Department of Transportation has published the following printable tri-fold evacuation guides:
• Hwy. 290 Houston to Austin, Bryan, College Station, Waco
• Hwy. 59 Houston to Nacogdoches
• All Coastal areas (large file may take awhile to load)
