UTMB fire forces evacuation
04:56 PM CDT on Monday, April 30, 2007
GALVESTON — About 50 people were forced to evacuate when a fire in a medical device sent heavy smoke through the University of Texas Medical Branch’s pathology building.
No one was injured in the fire or during the evacuation.
The Galveston fire marshal said an autoclave, which uses heat and pressure to sterilize medical equipment, is what caught fire.
The fire was contained to the southwest corner of the building, but the entire second floor of the building sustained smoke damage, said fire officials.
