An endangered Kemp's ridley laid 84 eggs on South Padre Island Tuesday, officials said. It is the first known nesting this year.
The turtle was examined before it crawled back into the Gulf of Mexico, according to information released Tuesday the National Park Service division of sea turtle science and recovery at Padre Island National Seashore.
The turtle did not have any tags or other markings with which scientists have marked Kemp's ridley turtles that have been found nesting on the state's coast in recent years.
From 1979 through 1996, only 17 Kemp's ridley nestings were recorded in Texas. Last year, the known Kemp's ridley nestings on Texas beaches hit 102, more than double 2005's record of 50.
