One of two dogs involved in fatal mauling to be euthanized
07:28 PM CDT on Wednesday, March 28, 2007
One of the two dogs involved in the mauling death of a Friendswood woman on March 17 will be euthanized, a judge said Wednesday.
Pamela Rushing was killed by her three dogs while playing with them in her backyard.
The dogs, a golden retriever and Australian shepherd, have been in custody of Animal Control since the incident. A third dog was shot by police upon arriving at the scene of the mauling.
Municipal Judge James Woltz presided over the hearing regarding the disposition of the two remaining animals.
The golden retriever was declared a vicious animal and will be euthanized. The Australian shepherd was declared a dangerous animal, which means it can remain in the city of Friendswood as long as certain stipulations are followed to insure its safe housing.
The city requires the animal be registered, kept in a proper enclosure, wear a fluorescent yellow or orange collar, be muzzled in public and be spayed or neutered. The owner must also post a sign outside of his home declaring the presence of a dangerous animal and present the city with a liability insurance policy on the animal worth $100,000.
Bendel Rushing, the widower of the victim, was present at the conference. He waived his right to a hearing regarding the disposition of the animals.
