LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas – A haz-mat situation has Highway 59 in Liberty County shut down in both directions near Washington Avenue, deputies said.

According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, a Fed Ex truck with an unknown chemical needs to be maintained at a very cool temperature.

There is a malfunction in the refrigeration of the truck. Deputies have haz-mat teams icing down the truck to maintain the cooler temperature.

The chemical most likely will have to be off loaded and cooled if crews cannot get the truck’s refrigeration system to work, deputies said.

This could take several hours. There are three 55-gallon drums on board.

Motorists heading south asked to take FM 223 to Shepherd, while those heading north are told to take FM 105 to FM 1725 as alternate routes.
