Family desperate for answers after fatal NE Houston hit-and-run

Nearly two weeks after a hit-and-run killed a man in northeast Houston, detectives have no suspects and only a vague description of the vehicle.

HOUSTON - Detectives need help finding the driver who hit, dragged and left a Houston father dead near the East Loop and Homestead.

John Wesley Small, 43, was a frugal truck driver who loved to party. He died March 31 while on a date. Small was hit and killed while walking across Homestead near Miley Road.

Nearly two weeks later, detectives have no suspects and only vague descriptions of the truck involved: a maroon or dark-colored pickup truck with chrome wheels.

“It’s just this cold feeling,” said Sandra Small, John’s mother. “You’re cold and you’re shaking, and you don’t want it to be true.”

It is agony for Small’s mother Sandra, three brothers, 12- and 14-year-old children and his girlfriend, Samantha Key.

“My mind will forever be wondering what did he go through, because I don’t have any closure to that,” Key said.

She is the last loved one to see Small alive. The two were on a date. Small drove her to Triple J’s Barbecue for dinner. He left to buy beer down the street and promised to return quickly. However, he did not.

“I fainted because I knew,” Key said.

After seeing flashing lights and commotion in the distance, Key and relatives feared the worst. They heard nothing from the medical examiner until Small’s brother called the next day.

“We just can’t understand why the person didn’t stop,” said Andre Small, John Small’s brother.

At least one witness called Sandra Small to tell her how other people surrounded and comforted John Small in those final moments. It is hardly closure, though. The family wants an arrest.

“Somebody out there knows that somebody had this truck, and they may have gotten it fixed by now,” Sandra Small said. “But they hit somebody and they killed somebody. You need to come forward.”

Anyone with information on the driver or the truck involved should call the Houston Police Hit and Run Unit at (713)-247-4065 or Crime Stoppers at (713)-222-TIPS.
