Fallen Brazoria Co. firefighter leaves lasting legacy

He left behind quite the legacy. That's what the family of Captain Dene Barber says they're remembering this Christmas.

LAKE JACKSON, Texas - He left behind quite the legacy. That’s what the family of Captain Dene Barber says they’re remembering this Christmas.

The Brazoria County firefighter died of a heart attack last week while fighting an apartment fire.

Barber’s wife called her husband a loving public servant.

“He was the best husband, the best father, the best provider. Anything that he did, he gave 150 percent to," Cindy Barber said.

That included her husband’s 7 years as a volunteer fireman.

“The tone went out, and he told us, 'Love ya’ll guys, but I gotta go,'” Cindy Barber said, adding her husband was a true volunteer and didn’t make a dime from his public service.

The Barber family has found comfort in the memories Dene Barber left behind, adding the messages from people he assisted in the community have helped.
