Alief ISD accused of mold cover-up

08:05 PM CDT on Friday, November 2, 2007

By Wendell Edwards / 11 News

11 News has uncovered another potentially dangerous mold situation at an area school.

Teachers there are telling us they unknowingly have been breathing in mold at Alief ISD’s Learning Center.

Errol Jones is a special education teacher at the alternative school and said a few weeks ago, he started feeling sick.

“(I was) lightheaded. I started feeling headaches,” he said.

Several other teachers complain of similar symptoms, so, the teacher's union contacted 11 News.

They claim the school district knew there was mold and tried to white wash over it without alerting employees of the potential hazards.

"I'm very upset that this remediation was going on and no staff member at the school knew,” said teacher Veronica Thibideaux.

The district's director of maintenance confirmed it there was indeed a remediation effort.

“We found some small amounts of mold scattered on the wall,” said maintenance director Jeff Delisle.

A small amount found on a wall in hallway near the front of the school.

We're told, it was removed at night and over one weekend.

"Everything is has been taken care of. We have very excellent air quality all around,” said Delisle. “We are ready to paint the wall and make it new again."

We found out the principal knew about the mold, but staff members didn't.

"I'm adult. I'm a teacher. I'm part of the team,” complained Thibideaux. “I don't think there is any excuse for teachers not (to) be notified."
