Junior high helping parents protect kids from online predators

Children could be in danger online if they are using myspace.com and a school in the Clear Creek Independent School District is trying to help parents protect kids. It has been said that the intermediate or junior high years are among the most impressionable in a child’s life. Principal David Williams sees it all the time. It’s not what the kids are learning at school that has Williams worried, but what they are doing at home on the computer. Williams sent a letter home to parents urging them to be aware of what Web sites their child is visiting—mainly myspace.com. It’s a site where teens can interact with other teens, but can potentially be a haven for online predators. “We wanted to let the parents know that it is a very frequent occasion for kids in this area to be doing, and that there are dangers involved and that they need to take precautions in this” Williams said. Williams said his alarms went off after watching a Channel 11 News report about the recent runaway of a League City teen who met a man on myspace.com. Jenna Rhane is among the many students who use the Web site and admit they have received e-mails from strangers. “Do not put any personal information on it because people can come and find you if they want to,” Rhane said. Seabrook Intermediate School’s computers block sites like myspace.com. Now it’s hoping educating parents is another way to shield their children from trouble. A teacher at the school took an informal survey of all of her female students. She went to myspace.com and looked up their personal pages and found that some of those students lied about their age and gave out personal information. The school is taking this very seriously and will be hosting an Internet workshop next month to educate parents.
