Driver killed after car broke down on Beltway 8

HOUSTON - A driver has died after she was hit by a car when her car broke down on Beltway 8.

HPD investigated the fatal auto pedestrian accident on the Eastbound lanes of Beltway 8 near Vickery Dr early Saturday just before 2 a.m. Units arrived on the scene and found three vehicles involved and one young woman had been struck and killed.

A woman was reportedly driving, along with a passenger, when the car had some kind of mechanical failure. The driver stopped in a moving lane of the freeway. Another driver attempted to swerve to avoid the stopped car but clipped the driver's side.

When both drivers exited their cars, a third vehicle was unable to avoid striking the first car in the back on the driver's side, and in turn striking the driver who was standing next to her car.

Because the deceased driver was in a moving lane of traffic, it appears that no charges will be filed against the other drivers.

The eastbound lanes of Beltway 8 were closed to traffic for several hours while police investigated.
