Local church leaders charged with student loan, FEMA fraud

10:47 AM CST on Thursday, November 20, 2008

KHOU.com staff report

HOUSTON – Federal prosecutors have charged the leaders of a southwest Harris County church with student loan and FEMA fraud.

Prosecutors on Thursday unsealed the indictment against Eric and Sheila Washington, the pastors of the Fishers of Men Worship Center.

The secretary and treasurer of the church were also charged.

Prosecutors claim the accused would recruit church members who were students, file for student loans in their names and pocket the cash.

They’re also accused of overstating the number of Hurricane Katrina evacuees who stayed in their church to get more money from FEMA.

If convicted, the suspects face anywhere from five to 30 years in prison.
