Accused kidnapper behind bars
04:46 PM CDT on Sunday, October 12, 2008
CLEVELAND -- A father accused of kidnapping his estranged wife and their four children is behind bars.
Investigators said Ramiro Contreras kidnapped his family at gunpoint in September at their Cleveland home, shooting three people in the process.
One of the victims, the children's grandmother, died.
Contreras released his family just hours later, but has been on the run ever since.
Authorities finally arrested Contreras on Saturday in San Jacinto County.
“It appears when we first stopped him that he wanted to fight with the officers. There was a small scuffle and he was arrested," said Harry Kelley, Cleveland Police.
Investigators said they were able to track Contreras down through his cell phone records.
