Suspicious death of Crosby toddler haunts medical personnel
05:19 PM CDT on Thursday, October 9, 2008
CROSBY, Texas—In Crosby, the tragic death of 2-year-old Kiley Perkins has plenty of people talking.
For several days, Kiley was in intensive care at Memorial Hermann. Doctors said she was unresponsive.
Tuesday night, she was baptized and taken off life support.
She died just before 10 p.m.
Family members spent much of the day Wednesday at the funeral home and cemetery, making arrangements.
When Kiley is buried in a few days, some family members are hoping one person in particular won’t be there. They’re hoping that person will be behind bars, charged with capital murder.
Detectives say Kiley was with her father’s girlfriend when the toddler supposedly fell and injured herself.
She was flown to the Texas Medical Center.
Harris County Homicide got involved immediately, Sgt. Roger Wedgeworth said.
To get an idea of how bad Kiley was hurt, at least one flight nurse and some paramedics from Crosby were so distraught by her condition, they’re seeking special counselors to help them cope.
An autopsy determined the toddler had multiple skull fractures.
That has detectives – and her family members – suspecting foul play.
Still, if anyone is to be charged with a crime, it will take time.
If it turns out to be a case of child abuse, it will be the second time since March that a Crosby resident has been charged with such an unthinkable crime.
Michael Spradlin, 25, is currently in jail awaiting trial after prosecutors say he shook his 15-month-old son to death.
A fund has been established to help Kiley's family with burial costs and other needs. If you would like to contribute, the fund is at the Woodforest National Bank, account No. 1127326203.
