HOUSTON -- Practically any hour of the day, traffic on the East Freeway flashes by in a blur. Most of the drivers are understandably preoccupied with the road ahead of them and not the overpass above.

Brothers Johnny and Richard Leauvano had just finished a plumbing job and were on their way home. It was about 6:30 p.m. and they were travelling east, but as they approached the Waco Street overpass, the truck’s windshield shattered.

“We didn’t know what it was,” said Richard.

“I just saw the rock coming in and hit. It was just the glass shattering, basically glass flying everywhere inside the cab,” said Johnny.

It didn’t take the brothers long to figure out what had happened.

“It caught me off guard. I pulled over right away. We knew what it was. It was kids,” said Richard. “That overpass is a haven for that. They are constantly throwing rocks.”

He said relatives' cars had been hit from the same overpass.

The Houston Police Department doesn’t have any firm statistics on how many instances of rock tossing happen in the city each week. Police said they have received two other complaints within 10 minutes of the Leauvanos’ report.

At Ada’s Window Tint, though, they said they see rocks thrown through windows every two to three days.

“Mostly just little kids. They’re throwing them over the overpasses when people are passing through. That’s what I head over the fence,” said Mark Cano of Ada’s.

“Where are these kids’ parents? That was my first thought,” said Johnny. “These guys should be home doing their homework, but they’re out trying to hurt people.

“I don’t think they are aware of the consequences.”

For now, Richard Leauvano said he is thankful his wallet was the only thing hurt by the rock tossing.
