Thieves strike stables dedicated to kids
10:19 AM CDT on Friday, October 3, 2008
HOUSTON -- Although it is only minutes from downtown Houston, Klassic Stables is the kind of place where the worries of the world kind of slip away.
At the stables, it is not all about the horses. It's also about giving back.
“It's about having somewhere for the kids to go. People from the city who've never seen or touched a horse,” said Klassic Stables owner Craig Garret.
So, about 20 times a year Garrett stages events for at-risk youth from the inner city.
“We have country-style games. Sack races, horseshoes. We teach them how to ride,” said Garrett. “I have it to give and I think more people who have it to give should give it.”
There are always those, though, who just take and take unlawfully. Such was the case when Garrett was trying to replace the stable roof that was blown away by Hurricane Ike.
He was almost done when someone broke in one night and took a bunch of the stable's equipment. All-in-all $10,000 in compressors, nail guns, a lawnmower and even a 4-wheeler were taken.
It was the second time this year Garrett had been ripped off.
“(I'm) disappointed. Mr. Garrett has spent a lot of time and resources trying to build something for the community, for the children,” said horse owner Dwight Boykins. “To have this happen again, it's real disappointing.”
There's just one thing the thieves didn't count on. One of the people who stables his horse at Klassic, happens to be a sheriff's deputy.
He dusted for some prints and found some.
Garrett is also offering a $5,000 reward out of his own pocket to catch the thief.
