Robbers dressed in construction gear hold up Amegy Bank in League City

07:56 AM CDT on Friday, August 1, 2008

By Sara McDonald / The Daily News

LEAGUE CITY — Two men wearing hard hats, reflective vests and blue bandannas over their faces held up an Amegy Bank just before 11 a.m. Thursday, pointing pistols at tellers as they jumped over a counter and demanded cash, police said.

It took the robbers less than a minute to enter the bank, 2460 Marina Bay Drive, order employees to the ground, get the money and get out.

“They obviously knew what they were doing,” League City police spokesman Sgt. John Jordan said.

No one was injured, and police don’t think any customers were in the bank during the robbery, Jordan said.

The men fled in a white Ford Thunderbird, which police found half a block away from the bank.

The car wasn’t reported as stolen, and police traced its ownership to a Houston woman, Jordan said.

There was nothing left in the car, Jordan said.

Tracking dogs from Pearland came out to try to find where the men went after leaving the car, but the dogs lost track of the scent in a backyard two streets away.

Jordan said police cordoned off the area quickly and suspect the men may have had another car waiting to make their getaway.

At the FBI’s request, police aren’t releasing how much cash the robbers got away with.

Police will examine the Thunderbird today, but Jordan said the men were wearing gloves and police don’t expect to recover fingerprints from the bank or car.

Police interviewed residents in the neighborhood where the car was found but didn’t find any witnesses, Jordan said.
