Andrew Garcia, 20, left, and Bruno Aviles, 17, are wanted to questioning in the case of an ex-HPD cop who was critically wounded in a drive-by shooting on Monday.

Police also released photos of Bruno Aviles, 17, and Andrew Garcia, 20. They are wanted for questioning in the shooting of 77-year-old Velia "Belle" Ortega.

Ortega was critically wounded after being struck repeatedly by a torrent of bullets shot from a high-powered rifle through an apartment door.

Ortega was visiting relatives at the Plum Creek Apartments in the 6900 block of South Loop East when the shooting happened at about 1:20 p.m. on Monday.

Ortega was the first Hispanic woman hired as a Houston police officer. She had a 42-year career with HPD before retiring in 1999.

She remains in critical condition at Ben Taub Hospital.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Aviles or Garcia should call HPD’s Homicide Division at (713) 308-3600.
