Man found beaten to death in SUV

07:11 AM CDT on Tuesday, July 8, 2008

BAYOU VISTA — Investigators late Monday afternoon were questioning a man found wandering partially clothed and possibly drunk in the Bayou Vista neighborhood where a 27-year-old man was found beaten to death inside a sport utility vehicle.

A police patrol officer found Karim Gamil Ubaldo, whose last known address was in Tomball, dead inside a Jeep about 5:40 a.m. Monday.

Although initially officers though Ubaldo had been shot, an autopsy found that he died from blunt force trauma to his upper body and face.

Ubaldo had bruises and abrasions on his torso and head, Galveston County medical examiner spokesman John Florence said.

The autopsy also found he might have been suffocated, Florence said.

Investigators don’t know what was used to kill Ubaldo or where the beating happened, sheriff’s office spokesman Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said.

Police found the man after one resident called 911 to report a suspicious man without a shirt on walking around houses.

Patrol officers couldn’t find anyone matching the caller’s description, but when a second resident called and reported seeing the man, they found him and started questioning him, Tuttoilmondo said.

It was during the search for the suspicious man that police found the Jeep parked in the 1100 block of Sailfish Street.

Tuttoilmondo said neither the dead man nor the one being questioned are known to local law enforcement officers, but Ubaldo pleaded guilty in Harris County for theft and evading arrest charges two years ago.
