Houston jury deciding cop killer's punishment
05:22 PM CDT on Monday, May 19, 2008
HOUSTON -- A Harris County jury is deciding if a convicted cop killer should die for murdering a Houston police officer.
On Monday, prosecutors told the jury that in just a matter of seconds Juan Quintero shot and killed Houston Police Officer Rodney Johnson.
“The consequence of that will be, Juan Leonardo Quintero will get the ultimate punishment,” said Assistant DA John Jordan.
He also reminded jurors of Quintero’s videotaped confession. “You look for some humanity in this defendant heart, soul in this defendant. You can watch it 20 times and you won’t find it.”
Johnson’s death devastated his family.
He left an extended family that included his wife and five children.
But the defense argued that Quintero is already serving a life sentence. “No verdict that you can render that’s going to put right what’s wrong,” said Danalyn Recer.
The defense also asked for the very same thing, they say, Quintero denied Rodney Johnson.
“I ask you to be fair and to be thoughtful and most of all to be merciful and to please extend to Mr. Quintero-Perez mercy,” said Recer.
The jury took about five hours to convict Quintero of capital murder last week.
