Homeless family reportedly beaten for fun

The homeless are often called the invisible people.

But a family who calls Houston’s streets home was anything but invisible the night they were attacked.

A woman and her son talk about the night they were attacked.

“I heard a stomp of the feet and about half a second later I just felt something heavy on the face,” said Michael Gedovin.

He and his mother, Sharon, say they never imagined they would become victims of such a vicious crime.

“My son yelled from his bedside ‘mom lay down don’t move, lay down and don’t move,” said Sharon Gedovin.

That terrorizing incident left Michael with 14 painful stitches.

Roman Martinez was also assaulted that night. “They just pointed a gun at them and they just hit me some more.”

He suffered a broken nose and an eye so swollen it can’t even open.

Sharon Godovin suffered injuries to the face. “What I was worried about was with the feeling and the blood gushing out of my eye that I had lost my eye.”

Luckily, she didn’t lose her eye, but she did lose her sense of security early Sunday evening at John Bute Park.

This trio says they were sleeping when suddenly seven armed men attacked them and beat them with poles.

The attackers weren’t looking for cash or valuables, but fun.

“The guys just started beating them like they were playing tee ball,” said Michael Gedovin.

Pastor Steve Hope offers prayer and food for the downtown homeless.

He says violent attacks against them are on the rise, partly because they are an easy target. “This is terrible, these kind of crimes are like hate crimes against the homeless.”

The family has run out of medicine since their visit to Ben Taub Hospital.

They are just letting the pain and wounds heal on their own.

As for the suspects, HPD says they are actively investigating the case.
